I am back with another quick read. Get your mittens ready: We are going to be baking some Christmas cookies!

How to make Santa’s Trash Cookies

It’s been a while since my last contribution to this blog. What better way to make a comeback than writing a Christmas themed article. I am still new to the Christmas traditions (No Christmas in India, sorry guys.), but I had been waiting since October to get tanked on “Glühwein” and eat all the cookies and gingerbread in the world, so that I can finally unpack my fat pants from storage

Today, I bring to you one of my favourite Christmas Cookie recipes: Santa’s Trash Cookies. I know I can just share the recipe link with you and be done with it, but my Social Media team won’t be very delighted with it. Instead, I am going to walk you through my experience making these cookies and I hope my girlfriend does not kick me out of the house for destroying our kitchen.

Ingredients: You would need…

To make the food, we generally need supplies first. So, go to the nearest supermarket and pick up some ingredients. My google search results show that we need the following:

  1. 3/4 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
  2. 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  3. 1/2 cup brown sugar
  4. 1 large egg
  5. 2 tsp. vanilla (sugar or liquid essence)
  6. 2 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  7. 1 tsp. baking soda
  8. 1/4 tsp. kosher salt
  9. 1/3 cup crushed potato chips
  10. 1/3 cup crushed pretzels
  11. 1/3 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  12. 3 tbsp. red and green sprinkles
  13. Flaky sea salt, for garnish

I found everything pretty easily, but the lady in the supermarket wasn’t too happy with me looking for a large egg. So, guys, just get an egg, my cookies turned out fine with a mediocre egg. Since you are at the store, also pick up some measuring spoons for baking, or if you are daredevil like me, go ahead and wing it with your normal cutlery.

Instructions: Let’s get started

  1. Take a big bowl (master bowl) and drop the butter, granulated sugar and brown sugar in the bowl and start mixing, mix them till it gets as fluffy as Santa’s beard.

Make sure the butter is not a cold solid brick.
  1. Take a smaller bowl and whip together the egg and vanilla.

That is one fluffy piece of dough.
  1. Mix the egg and vanilla in the master bowl and make sure it is equally distributed, unlike our unequal world.
  2. We are not done with mixing yet, take another container and mix all the dry ingredients, such as flour, baking soda and salt.

Mix it well, till you have a hot mess
  1. Drop the dry mix into the master bowl and mix well that will result in a thick and dry blob of cookie dough.
  2. This brings us to the fun part, where you can add all the garnishing (potato chips, pretzels, chocolate chips, and sprinkles) into the dough. I suggest that you crush the larger pieces of garnishing to a smaller size, especially the potato chips (I am not a big fan of the potato chips) and pretzels.

Isn’t it just beautiful
  1. Add them to the batter and mix them gently.

Bring in the heat!

Rookies like me, never preheat the oven. So, don’t be me and make sure that you preheat the oven at 180-200 degree Celsius when you start with the cookie dough. Once the oven is nice and warm, proceed to:

  1. Prepare the baking tray with baking paper and scoop the dough using a spoon. You may require to use your hands to compress the dough and shape them, as in the image below. Once the cookies are arranged on the tray, then sprinkle a bit of sea salt over the tray. Depending on the size of cookie you prefer, this dough should provide you 30-35 cookies.

I was one proud Mama!
  1. Bake the cookies for 8-10 mins, till the point they are golden in colour. If you feel that they are still raw on the inside, drop them in the oven for a bit longer
  2. Take them out of the oven and let them rest for 3-5 mins.

Let’s feast!

Mission successful, remember to take the picture before you start eating them!!

Congratulations, you have in front of you, Christmas cookies made form Santa’s trash that you bought from the supermarket. Make yourself a hot chocolate and enjoy your delicious creation. I hope you enjoy this lovely experience and do not forget to share what you baked, share your Christmas spirit and spread the festive joy. That’s it for me and I’ll be back with another blog soon.
